Measuring Policing Equity
Across America the issue of equitable policing has been the subject of much debate arising out of deep societal concerns for fairness, transparency and accountability in our justice system. Many important research questions remain regarding the training of police officers and their interactions with community members of color who are over-represented in the justice system.
As a result of an innovative collaboration among community stakeholders including the Colorado Latino Forum, the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance, the NAACP Denver Branch, and ACLU of Colorado and systems collaborators including the Denver Police Department, the Office of the Independent Monitor, the Center for Policing Equity, and the Denver Safety Department, Denver residents will soon have answers to critical questions including the patterns of interactions and procedural changes that can help reduce racial bias in an effort to encourage public trust and confidence through effective and equitable policing practices.
At this community forum, project partners will discuss their collaboration with the Center for Policing Equity on a new research model integrating experimental survey research to address issues surrounding race and gender and policing equity in law enforcement.
Participants will discuss the creation of a data collection card that will be required of officers initiating investigatory stops or other discretionary contacts with citizens. Relevant and anonymous data from these police/citizen contacts will be captured and retained for future analysis, with the intent to demonstrate DPD’s commitment to unbiased policing.
Community members will have an opportunity to weigh-in with their feedback about the project, and the next steps for sharing the results that will assess changes in attitudes or behaviors and interactions between the police department and the community it serves.
The subcommittee will be presenting their work at a community forum hosted by the Denver Park Hill Seventh-Day Adventist Church (3385 Albion St., Denver, CO 80207) on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 6 PM.
