As always, food and beverages (including beer and wine) will be available for purchase before, during, and after the meeting.
We have a FANTASTIC meeting scheduled. We’ll hear from local candidates and from a great author!
First, the candidates: You know, one of the things that regularly bugs me about the typical ‘Meet the Candidates’ forums is the fact that they’re usually some type of fundraiser event that often costs $50-$100 to attend. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with fundraising, but I don’t think you should have to pay money just to learn more about the candidates who will be on your ballot. We’re going to try to fix that! We’ll start this month by introducing you to the candidates for Arvada City Council. They’ve all been invited to come speak with you briefly, explain their individual campaign platforms, and take a few questions from you. As you know, we call this ‘applying for the job.’ I know many of you live and vote in Arvada, and those of you who don’t probably have friends, relatives, or co-workers who do, so hopefully this candidate forum will allow many voters to make a better-informed decision about the Arvada City Council on election day. The candidates who will be speaking at this meeting are: Nancy Ford, John Marriott, Dot Miller, Jim Whitfield, and John Malito.
Also speaking at our July meeting is the fantastic author Sue Summers, who will give a presentation entitled MEDIA ALERT! Get them thinking: Time to Teach Media Literacy.
Can we encourage young people to think critically about the multitude of media messages that bombard them each day?
Sue Summers is a former Jeffco Schools library media specialist who is the Director of Media Alert! She and her friend, Donna Shepherd, ran a non-profit called “PRIIME TIIME Today” for 17 years, devoted to media literacy – the application of critical thinking to the messages of the media. Working with media outlets, such as 9NEWS, they provided opportunities for middle school and high school students to learn about the impact of the media in our society and to respond personally in essay and PSA formats. She is the author of 3 books, 1 media literacy board game, and the only media literacy coloring book in the world. Sue is currently working on a media literacy curriculum for church youth groups.
And as always, we’ll make time at this meeting for any announcements our attendees (that’s you!) may have regarding events, meetings, activist opportunities, etc. that we need to know about.
Please plan to join us on Thursday the 20th, it’s always free and the experience is priceless. Bring any liberty-loving patriot friends and family members who’d like to see this country get back on the right track.
Come out, get involved, and be part of the solution!
